General Motors
Gonen is currently leading Radar development for retail autonomy programs at GM, spanning teams in Israel and the United-States. In this role, Gonen is responsible for all aspects of Radar technology development, Radar product development and Radar integration into GM vehicles – focusing on next-gen technologies for autonomous driving in the retail market (L2-L4) This is done with close collaboration with the Radar ecosystem – Tier1/2s, start-ups etc.
Formerly, Gonen led GM’s in-house development of two radars for L4/L5 autonomous driving (RoboTaxi), in collaboration with Cruise automation in San Francisco (owned by GM).
Prior to joining GM, Gonen led HW, SW and ASIC development at start-up companies – primarily in the fields of communication, PLC, IoT, 3G/4G and Radar.
Frost & Sullivan
CEO and Founder of Qamcom, with a PhD in Communication Systems from Chalmers, Johan has been active in the telecommunication business since the mid-90’s and has a deep interest for communication and information technology and its impact on modern society. Founded in 2001, Johan has developed Qamcom into a company with more than 300 employees. During the years 2010-2012, Johan was Head of Hardware Development for Microwave Systems at Ericsson with responsibility for all hardware operations including around 350 people over four sites world-wide.
Johan has been awarded by EY in the Entrepreneur of the Year competition in 2012 and has a wide network of connections in the technology industry.
Radar SystemsGhost Locomotion
Dr. Markel leads the radar division of Ghost Locomotion, an autonomous driving company using breakthroughs in collision avoidance technology to develop safe, attention-free self-driving for mass market consumer cars. His team is a diverse, innovative, and collaborative group of electrical, mechanical, software, and RF engineers with backgrounds from the tech, autonomy, and defense sectors.Prior to Ghost, he led the radar team at Waymo, formerly the Google Self-Driving Car Project. His radar department designed and delivered multiple generations of indigenously designed tracking and imaging radars to Waymo’s self-driving fleet. He developed the radar research and development framework that has provided numerous cutting-edge technologies and capabilities to Waymo’s radar product line.
At Raytheon, Dr. Markel was a Principal Engineering Fellow on the Space and Airborne Systems Technical Staff. He served as the Technical Director for Raytheon Advanced Electronic Warfare (EW), has been directly involved in the transition of key radar and EW capabilities to the U.S. military, and has been a Principal Investigator for multiple radar and EW research programs that advanced the state of capability, effectiveness, autonomy, and cognition in U.S. systems.
Dr. Markel is widely recognized as an expert and leader in radar, especially automotive radar for autonomous systems, Technology Readiness Assessments and Technology Readiness Levels (he served on the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) panel of subject matter experts), and electronic warfare. He holds multiple patents and trade secrets from his time at Raytheon and Waymo.
